Telkom landline porting history

On 26 April 2010, ICASA implemented the geographic number portability (GNP) process for individual customers and small businesses. Commercial customers were able to do this since 18 May 2009. 

We are excited to be able to offer the benefits of GNP to all our customers with immediate effect.

Number porting questions

Can I port out my existing Telkom landline number from Telkom?

You are now able to port out your existing Telkom landline telephone, phone number/s from Telkom to another telephone line service provider.

This means that you will be able to keep and use your existing Telkom telephone, phone number/numbers on a different telephone service providers telephone network and telephone line services.

This means that you will not loose your existing Telkom landline telephone, phone number/s when changing over to our telephone network.

Can I port out my existing Telkom landline number if Telkom discontinues the copper telephone line, phone line network infrastructure in my exchange area?

You will be able to port out your existing Telkom landline telephone, phone number/s when Telkom discontinues the copper telephone line, phone line network infrastructure in your exchange area. 

As long as you have an existing account with Telkom, you will be able to port out your landline telephone, phone number/s. Find out more about Telkom no longer supporting copper telephone, phone lines.

Can Telkom stop me from porting out my Telkom telephone, phone number?

Telkom can reject your porting application if your current Telkom account is in arrears and you have an outstanding balance. 

Once you have brought your Telkom account up to date we can then resubmit your porting application for your telephone, phone numbers to be ported.

What does the number porting process entail?

When you place an order with us for new telephone lines, phone lines and you would like to keep and use your existing Telkom landline number/s on our telephone network, we provide you with a porting application form to complete.

On the porting application form you can state the Telkom number/s which you would like to port over to our telephone network.

We will then submit your porting application to the National Porting Authority in South Africa and they will arrange with Telkom for your number/s to be ported over to our telephone network.

How long does number porting take?

Number porting takes on average between 3 to 5 working days.

Will I have any downtime and be without our incoming phone calls?

You will not have any downtime.
Number porting takes place during the evenings.
When your telephone number/s get ported over to our telephone network we automatically divert all your incoming calls to your cellphone number of choice so that you can still receive your incoming phone calls.

We will arrange your new telephone line installation the following day after your Telkom number/s have been ported over to us. Once your new telephone, phone line/s have been installed your incoming calls on your Telkom number/s will automatically start ringing on your new telephone, phone line/s.

This is a seamless and uninterrupted transition.
