Announcement: Telkom Discontinues Copper Phone Line & ADSL Services

In 2015 Telkom officially announced the discontinuation of it's copper network, marking a major shift in South Africa’s voice communication landscape.
For years, this network has been the backbone of traditional phone and ADSL services.

Telkom will no longer be replacing damaged or stolen copper telephone line, landline & ADSL cable infrastructure in certain exchange areas.

ARE COPPER PHONE LINES BEING PHASED OUT?

Copper phone lines and ADSL internet lines are being phased out as Telkom discontinues its copper-based services.

Telkom first announced it's plans to decommission copper-based telephone line, landline and ADSL technology in 2015, the company admitted it had lost over R200 million due to copper cable theft during the 2015 financial year.

About half of that was due to direct cable theft repair costs and the other half was spent on the cost of security services.

Due to the high cost of maintaining and replacing the old legacy copper line infrastructure and due to the high risk of ongoing copper cable theft Telkom has decided to discontinue the copper landline telephone services and ADSL internet services in the affected areas.

Telkom is actively moving toward a full copper network shutdown, with phased discontinuation already underway.

HOW DOES THIS IMPACT YOUR EXISTING TELKOM COPPER PHONE LINES?
